昔香嚴參溈山。

溈山云。我聞你在百丈處問一答十。問十答百。是否。

嚴云。不敢。

山云。試向父母未生已前道一句看。

嚴無語。乃云。請和尚為某甲道。

山云。我若為汝說破。子他時後日眼開。罵我去在。

嚴遂檢尋平日看讀文字。討一句祇對了不可得。

乃云。今生不學佛法也。且作長行粥飯僧。

乃辭溈山。往南陽。睹忠國師遺跡。遂憩止焉。

一日。芟除草木。以瓦礫擊竹作聲。忽然大悟。

遽歸。沐浴。遙禮溈山云。和尚大慈。恩踰父母。

當時若為我說破。何更有今日事。

乃述一頌云。

一擊忘所知。更不假修持。動容揚古路。不墮悄然機。

處處無蹤跡。聲色外威儀。諸方達道者。咸言上上機。
