discrepancy-difference 到底差在那?

discrepancy是應相同而不同的兩樣東西的比較.

例如There are discrepancies in the testimonies of the two witness.
這兩位證人的證詞有多處相抵觸的地方.
還有在商用英文裡所談到的discrepancy是在指文件或貨品不合規格時的"瑕疵"也就是應與信用狀規定不符的差異,或是貨品未依定貨單的規格製造,這些也稱為discrepancy.
一般而言discrepancy是有負面意思的.

difference則是單純比較所有東西的不同:
例如: What is the difference between a monkey and and chimpanzee.
猴子和猩猩的差別在那裡.

所以discrepancy是有限制於"應相同而不同之處"的差異.difference則可以用來比較廣意的差異.
